Web Developer

July 31st 2006 00:37
Web development is a blanket term that can be used to cover all the people who plan, build, and manage a given website. Web development professionals are responsible for conceiving, designing, building, programming, populating with content, branding, marketing, supporting, and managing websites. The Web offers a non-stop world. When the going is tough, a Web developer has to deal with with server migrations, download times, and site crashes in a virtual space driven by databases. Web developers typically work long hours, either as part of an in-house staff, professional service, or consulting organization, or on a contract basis. At smaller organizations, the Web developer will wear a variety of hats; at a larger organization, his or her role will be better defined.

The job of the Web development team is to create a compelling website. Typically, these websites are designed to support a business or organisation. Web developers have to come up with a strategy for the website usually in concert with the client. They figure out the hardware that the site should use, the software necessary to make it function properly, the design and navigation that will get the public to use the site in a way that will support its business, and the information that will keep users coming back. Web developers also program the site so that it functions effectively, adding tools like community discussions and newsletter sign-up capability. They also set up reporting tools and databases to record traffic to the site and what visitors are doing there.

Telecommunications Engineer

July 27th 2006 00:20
The telecommunications industry has been transformed dramatically by advances in information technology over the last two decades. The widespread take-up of high-speed digital transmission methods such as fibre optic cabling, and the increasing use of a diverse range of mobile telecommunications services, has resulted in rapid change and evolution in the industry. Furthermore, with the regional area the telecommunications industry has been heavily deregulated in recent years. The traditional monopolies of Telstra have become challenged with new deregulation trends that have resulted in the expansion of the industry to more that 100 licensed telecommunication carriers within Australia and New Zealand.

Due to its central role in facilitating rapid digital information exchange, and its role in facilitating Internet usage, the telecommunications industry has been dubbed the backbone of the so-called 'new economy'. The industry is expected to offer substantial employment opportunities in the future for skilled, technologically competent staff. The telecommunications industry is highly competitive and constantly changing. Workers will always be required to keep their job skills and knowledge of current developments up to date. The industry's use of rapidly changing, high-technology products and services will constantly fuel the demand for new employees.

Barrister

July 26th 2006 00:52
Barristers are legal specialists who research specific points of law, provide legal opinions, draft pleadings, and prosecute or defend cases in law courts. They accept briefs from instructing solicitors but do not take instructions directly from clients. As sole practitioners, they are not permitted to practice in partnerships but may employ other barristers to act on specific cases. Barristers may also serve on tribunals, disciplinary boards and professional committees. Before becoming a barrister it is typical to have several years' experience as a solicitor to develop confidence in the courtroom and gain the specific skills required for legal representative duties. A barrister may be registered in more than one jurisdiction and may travel to attend court, brief witnesses or examine a crime scene. Barristers with a proven track record may be appointed Senior Counsel (traditionally, a QC) or chairperson of a tribunal.

To become a barrister, you’ll need to demonstrate a high intellectual ability and possess sound public speaking skills. You’ll need to be able to relate to a broad range of people and communicate thoughts effectively. The job can be highly stressful and a barrister must be able to handle deadlines and stressful situations responsibly. Technological advancements have enabled databases to become prominent in the case handling and archiving of legal work. A familiarity with how data management software works is becoming necessary within the industry.

Town Planning

July 25th 2006 00:22
“Planning is a great career choice – there is lots of variety in the type of job you might do, it has great career prospects, and the pay is good too.”

Town planners get involved with community needs for space, and work with a variety of people. Australia's ageing population, a movement of baby boomers to coastal areas, the pressures of higher density inner-city living and the expectation of environmental sustainability are some of the key issues facing urban and regional planners in the 21st century. Town planning is a growth industry with forecasts projecting that over the next 5-10 years there will be a steady increase in the demand for planners. Town planning is a role for someone with people skills and a diverse set of skills academically, and awareness of economic change, cultural difference, environmental social change and all those sort of things which come together in making recommendations about changes in the city.

Realtor

July 24th 2006 00:54
Back to some more job profiles. Today I’ll be reviewing a hot career option that is growing in popularity, becoming a real estate agent.

Real estate agents lease, manage, value, buy and sell residential, rural, commercial and industrial property or businesses on behalf of their clients. Working in the real estate profession offers the opportunity to meet a wide range of people while carrying out a variety of different tasks and responsibilities. It can be very satisfying to assist people with important decisions such as buying, selling or renting a home or investment property. Real estate agents offer a range of services depending upon the type of property they have been appointed to sell, lease or manage on behalf of an owner. The agent must always consider the owner’s wishes about price, contractual conditions and the marketing of the property. The real estate agent, once appointed to sell a property, begins a marketing campaign to attract potential buyers to the property. They then take prospective buyers to view the property and supply additional information.

Apprenticeships – Hairdressing

July 20th 2006 00:25
Hairdressing is a trade qualification, which means that there are formal requirements to become a qualified hairdresser. The Certificate III in Hairdressing is the standard trade qualification. In several states, it is a requirement that the Certificate III in Hairdressing is completed as an apprenticeship. After the completion of an apprenticeship, hairdressers in some states are also required to be registered.

An apprenticeship is a learning experience - don't expect to be cutting and styling hair from the first day. As an apprentice develops their skills, they are progressively entrusted with more responsibility and get involved in a wider range of tasks. In the initial stages of their apprenticeship, apprentice hairdressers do routine tasks, including cleaning, shampooing, removing simple hairdressing treatments, and sterilising and maintaining equipment. As apprentices gain experience and develop their skills they are able to carry out more complex tasks under supervision. There are many opportunities within the industry, and good hairdressers are always in demand. The majority of hairdressers are employed in hairdressing salons. Most salons employ between four and six people, although some salons employ a much larger numbers of hairdressers. Most salons also employ apprentices.

Apprenticeships - Shipwright

July 19th 2006 00:57
In my opinion, becoming a shipwright would be one of the coolest jobs ever. I actually worked in a shipyard during my summer vacation a few years ago and it was one of the best summer jobs I’ve ever done. I really enjoyed the experience of building a yacht from scratch. Every week you could look back and see the progress that had been made and it was really satisfying to see something so advanced and technically brilliant coming from the handy work of you and your peers. If anyone has the slightest interest in boats, I’d highly recommend looking into taking up a shipwrights trade.

The other aspect of completing a shipwrights apprenticeship and doing some hours of physical hard yakka puts you in good stead for progressing into the technical and design aspects of power or sailing yachts. This is the track that many of the industries best small craft designers have entered into the industry. Other worthwhile careers that can stem from a shipwrights apprenticeship include boat sales, marina and slipway operations, boat servicing, sailmaking, mechanical repairs, charter operations, chandlery/retail, boatbuilding, and other branches of the industry.

Apprenticeship Pay Rates

July 14th 2006 00:11
I once dated a chef who went through a chef’s apprenticeship and know a friend who has just started on a hospitality apprenticeship. A quick scan over the government Award rates for apprentices confirms that when you are learning your trade be expecting a very meager salary until you become fully qualified. Not to say that three to four years of a pitiful salary should put you off taking up a trade. In fact, once you are qualified, the financial rewards and independence can far outweigh any hardships during your training.

I’ll outline a few of the award rates for several disciplines of apprenticeships in Australia as I review them next week. Ultimately, it is up to your employer to decide how much they are going to pay you above and beyond the minimum award. Unfortunately many employers cannot or do not have the inclination to reward their trainees higher rates of pay. The Award rate is dependant on:

Industry based part time work:

If you are nearing the end of your university life, now might be a good time to start thinking about where you are going to head career-wise after your studies are complete. Finding some part time work in you field of studies offers many advantages. You’ll get to dip your toe in and really find out if you’ve made the right decision about what you want to specialize in for a career. It’s remarkable but some things that appear to be a lot of fun in university can be as boring as bat shit in the real world. You’ll get to see what the average pay rate is for your industry, working conditions, what a typical day may involve and other related avenues you may want to explore.

Jobs for Students – Cleaning

July 7th 2006 00:05
Cleaning:

Cleaning jobs are another service industry task similar to gardening. You can either work as a self employed individual or join a company that will find regular work for you. Cleaning jobs require general domestic upkeep and maintenance chores. Again the older community seeks cleaners to help them around the house and lets them maintain a relatively independent lifestyle. Active families may need a cleaner to help with some of the domestic chores that are difficult to keep a top of. The rewarding aspect about cleaning and gardening work is that you can usually find employment for yourself without working for an agency. This means that you’ve cut out a middle man (an employer) between you and the person receiving a service. The payback is that you’ll be able to earn a better rate of pay as a commission does not need to go to an employer.

Jobs for Students – Gardening

July 6th 2006 00:04
Gardening:

Gardening is a great way of getting outdoors during the spring and summer months. In the cooler winter periods it can get a bit chilly, although Australia is temperate enough to make it a year round job. It is a good job idea which many young people do not pursue because they think you need to have qualifications. This is not necessarily true. There are plenty of people advertising in local papers and community websites looking for someone who is prepared to spend a few hours tending and keeping their suburban garden looking neat. Many gardens don’t need a full blown landscapers and horticulturalist’s assistance. Furthermore, these services are very expensive. The average home occupant can’t afford the cost of hiring a gardening professional on a weekly basis just to keep things looking trim and neat.

Student Jobs - Childminding:

July 5th 2006 00:07
Childminding:

Babysitting, nannying and childminding is a great option for getting a bit of extra sending money. You can have the flexibility of taking it on as an ongoing part time job or simply using it as a occasional way of making some extra spending money as the odd favour to friends and family. With the cost of childcare centres on the rise, more and more duel income families are advertising for people to help look after their children during the day or after school. These families are looking to employ someone to assist with gathering their children from school, looking after them until the parents can return home from work and possibly assist with some light domestic duties during the working week. The work is relatively easy although some will require that you have a drivers license and be available from mid afternoon times. Before venturing into regular childminding work, you should start out with a bit of irregular experience either looking after youngsters from your family and friends. Do some evening baby sitting to ensure you can handle the responsibilities. People will usually want you to provide some references to demonstrate that you are a reliable and responsible person to care for their children. Getting into some evening casual baby sitting is a good way of developing some references.

Student Jobs - Clerical:

July 4th 2006 00:05
Clerical and secretarial jobs are a good field for students to look into for part time employment. There are many small companies that are looking for part time or split shift clerical staff. These companies don’t have the means or need to have a full time secretary. Instead, they need someone to work in the office a couple days a week or for regular short periods to help keep the organizational side of the company in check. Other popular places of clerical employment are healthcare offices. Small surgeries, dental practices and GP offices will employ multiple office staff to help run the daily management of the practice.

A clerical job can help you make a small step towards the career that you are studying for whilst also helping your part time employment favour. Getting a clerical position with a company within your field of study may lead to future employment when you are fully qualified, expose you to industry contacts and may open the door to exposure and experience within the industry prior to formally finishing your studies. When applying for several clerical jobs, make sure the one you put in extra effort for are those that are in your field. Law students may look for employment as a legal secretary, human science or physiotherapy students would be good clerical candidates for physio or chiropractic centres.
