Anaesthetists are specialist medical practitioners responsible for medically inducing insensitivity to pain in part(s) of the body for medical reasons, usually surgical procedures.

This can be done via a number of different methods and they most commonly are acupuncture, drugs and hypnosis. By administering any one of these methods, anaesthetists can render the patients unconscious - known as general anaesthesia - or merely numb a specific body part - local anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia can be broken down into sub specialties which includes:

- Cardiac and Thoracic Anaesthesia (including transoesophageal echocardiography)
- Neurosurgical Anaesthesia
- ENT Anaesthesia
- Anaesthesia for Head & Neck and Burns Surgery
- Transplant surgery
- Obstetric Anaesthesia
- Trauma Anaesthesia
- Acute, Cancer & Chronic Pain Management

Anaesthetists are also responsible for explaining to patients what they will experience before they go to sleep, when they wake up and the risks - if any - that are involved with anaethesia. Patients will also be made aware of any sensitive procedures such as the insertion of suppositories, and most importantly, be given the opportunity to ask questions.

In order to become a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), one must hold an accredited medical degree and complete an ANZCA approved training sequence encompasses an initial two-year Prevocational Medical Education and Training (PMET) period and the five-year period of ANZCA Approved Training (two years Basic Training and three years Advanced Training).
