Auto Electrician
January 30th 2008 08:56
Whenever I meet electricians, I'm always bordering on jealousy/envy... I know something about electrical systems, but not enough to do anything useful.
It doesn't matter to my mom, though, who thinks I should be able to fix anything. "The VCR's broken," she said, "can you fix it?"
"If fixing only requires a sarcastic response then, yes, I can fix it." I usually reply.
Being an Electrician is a handy job... so much of our world is wired, and knowing that little bit can save you time and money.
Recently, I took my car into the Auto Electrical shop down the street. No, that's a lie. My car wouldn't start, so I pulled out the battery and took it down to get tested.
Naturally, the battery was no good... it was fully charged, but it could deliver any power.
"This happens to old batteries, " he explained, "the sulfide builds up on the plates, limiting to amount of electricity that can get through."
Sure, makes sense.
Before prying out the battery, I did a little reading about the subject - because that's what I'm good for: sarcastic remarks and looking stuff up on the Internet - and did a few tests on my battery to see what was up. One of the 'facts' that I learned was that car batteries can explode, due to the hydrogen gas buildup in the chambers.
That's my tip to you - don't smoke around your batteries!
