Cardiologist
October 26th 2007 07:30
A cardiologist is a specialist doctor/physician pertaining to the heart - the all important organ in the body that is responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels by repetitive rhythmic contractions.
Typically speaking, prospective cardiologists require three years of specialty training on top of prior training in internal medicine.
Cardiology itself can be broken down into sub-specialties such as coronary angioplasty, diagnostic cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography, subspecialty training in adult cardiac electrophysiology, sub-specialty training in cardiac implantable electronic devices : Selection, implantation and follow up, inserting implantable defibrillators for primary prevention indications and adult echocardiography.
Thus cardiologists are widely known as the engineers of the heart.
Australian trained cardiologists hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with specialty training in cardiology.
