An endocrinologist is a qualified doctor in the field of endocrinology - a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the endocrine system and in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the glands of internal secretion, i.e. the endocrine glands.
The endocrine system is a very important system in humans and is responsible for maintaining balance within the body, keeping all the systems under control by using a series of intricate sensory mechanisms.
The organs which are part of the endocrine system include:
- The Pituitary Gland
- The Pineal Gland
- The Thyroid Gland
- The Parathyroid Glands
- The Thymus
- The Adrenal Glands
- The Pancreas
As specialists of internal medicine or paediatrics, endocrinologists are required to undertake further study (typically three years) upon graduation from medical school.
Endocrinologists are always in high demand and are handsomely renumerated for their expertise for e.g. this full-time position as a staff endocrinologist and obstetric physician in Brisbane has a salary packaging up to $315k.
