Gastroenterologists are specialist doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and disorders of the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and biliary system).
The digestive system includes the gastrointestinal tract which is essentially all the organs from where food enters (mouth) and exits (anus) the body.
Typically speaking, a gastroenterologist is responsible for diagnosing and treating the following conditions:
- Anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, colonic neoplasms, cancer, polyps
- Diverticulosis
- Esophageal reflux
- Gastritis
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Hepatitis
- Hiatal Hernia
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Ulcers
They should also be proficient in the treatment and management of:
- Abdominal pain
- Abnormal x-ray findings
- Constipation
- Diarrheoa
- Difficulty swallowing
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Jaundice
- Liver Disease
- Malabsorption
- Nausea
- Post-operative colon tests
- Rectal bleeding
- Unexplained weight loss
- Vomiting
Gastroenterologists uses years of medical studies and experience to diagnose certain illnesses while also using colon screening exams, oesophageal and intestinal dilation, hemostasis and polypectomy for more in-depth diagnostics.
In order to practice as a certified and registered gastroenterologist in Australia, one must undertake six years of university study and training to gain their basic medical qualifications; completed work as an intern in a general hospital for a further 12 months. This is then followed by a two year course which involves evaluating and managing digestive diseases and in-depth studies in internal medicine.
