A Horticulturist is an expert in the science of cultivating and propagating plants, fruit, vegetable and flowers etc.
Typically speaking, a horticulturist is responsible for a range of tasks that includes:
- Providing technical information to farmers, fruit, vegetable and flower growers, nursery operators and commercial firms trading in horticultural products such as frozen foods, seeds and fertilisers.
- Conducting experiments and investigations into cultivation, pest and disease control, production, storage, processing and transport of fruit, nuts, berries, vegetables, flowers, shrubs and trees.
- Experimenting with improved varieties of plants with greater resistance to disease, higher yield and improved nutritional value.
- Working in the field of landscape design to create parks, gardens and recreational areas, with concern for conservation and preservation of natural resources.
Depending on the job at hand, the horticulturist will be responsible for at least one of the aforementioned tasks i.e. working on large parks and gardens in a tourist hotspot would obviously include creating aesthetically pleasing flower beds and landscaping etc.
Other attributes are horticulturist should have are:
- Strong communication skills
- Strong work ethic
- Good time management
- Keen eye for detail
