How to Avoid Living Paycheck-to-Paycheck

August 6th 2008 02:25
The Simple Dollar posted this informative article on how to wean yourself off the 'just getting by' mentality that people put themselves through. I know a few people that live from paycheck-to-paycheck, and it's rarely because they don't make enough money.

"Living paycheck to paycheck is a problem of your own creation. But you’re not alone in creating that problem, and if you put your nose to the grindstone, you can get out of it and start moving towards financial prosperity."

The article identifies a few ways that people tend to lose money - a big one is in subscriptions. We live in a nefarious society, where companies realize that the best way to guarantee a steady flow of income is to hook you into paying for a service. That's why you get a free cellphone, but have to sign up to a plan.

That's why the gym loves it when you sign up for 3 years.

That's why even the charities harangue you to subscribe, just giving $5 a week!

Cut this stuff out of your expenses, stop eating out so much, stop driving around so much. Simple ideas, but these tips allow you to save money AND they generally improve the quality of your life. Weird, isn't it?

Sure, it's really tempting to get that iPhone (and I mean really tempting. The damn thing is sexy beyond belief), but what is it really doing for you? Allowing you to watch YouTube videos on the train? Is that really that important?

"3. Don’t shop for entertainment’s sake.
When you’re hanging out with friends, it can be tempting to go shopping for clothes or hit the electronics store. Don’t. Find anything else to do. Shopping for fun in a social environment is costly even if you don’t buy anything, because you’re surrounded by temptation and the mental imprintings of stuff that you want but don’t really need. It’s an excuse to talk to your friends about stuff you want and potentially talk yourself into purchases, either now or later. Just stay away."

Ah, Mr. Simple Dollar, that's an easy one for me. I hate shopping, and I rarely get this temptation.

I understand the point, though... it's easy for me to get sucked into buying things if I'm at the mall, looking at fancy knives, DVDs or comic books. In fact, I can't get enough comic books. I need more comic books. Maybe I should subscribe to some comic book delivery service?

It's a nice little article, but the entire site is quite informative. Check out this post on 'Eight Little Frugal Tips' that offers some suggestions for spending less money AND feeling more like a human being.

Thanks to amazon we can plan our purchases better and actually buy stuff that we want. When in a shopping center there are to many distractions and most of the stuff you'd buy would be impulsive. Unless you actually know what you're going out for then it's definitely best to shop online.
