Indians finding jobs back in India

April 30th 2008 04:05
Tata buys Jaguar
It used to be an accepted fact that highly-skilled Indians would find jobs in the US, move there, then tell all their highly-skilled friends to move there, too. Indians would fill in key roles in tech and research sectors, aiding the mighty fist of the US economy inches closer to the heavens.

But things have changed recently... the IT boom in India and the outsourcing movement have both contributed to an increase of wealth in India. As a result, companies are flourishing in the country, companies like Tata, which just acquired Jaguar.

In the Guardian comes an interesting article about how Indians are opting to stay in India, finding that, with great wealth, a better quality of life can be had.

It's a frightening look at how, once people have money, they can insulate themselves from the problems in a country:

"Now the decision to choose India is much easier. Jobs are plentiful and, armed with good salaries, the newly returned can cocoon themselves in gated Western-style ghettoes, which shut out any trace of the ever-present slums, squalor and poverty. The golf clubs of Delhi and neighbouring Gurgaon are full of recently returned Indians."

Of course, this means excellent things for India, who once had a tremendous brain drain. The best and brightest fled to America, filling MIT and Harvard with their ideas and creativity. Now that they're staying in their motherland, does this mean a powerful future for India and China, also experiencing the same effect?
