June 23rd 2006 02:24
To round of this week’s look at the IT industry I’m going to provide some statistics, facts and figures supplied by the Australian Computer Society. The ACS provides a very good careers guide for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the IT industry or is currently employed within the industry. A the end of June they issue an annual report providing an analysis of the industry. These are some of the findings for the year 2005.
All information has been sourced from the 2005 ACS Renumeration Survey.
What sort of salaries can be expected in the IT industry?
“In relative terms, the incomes of ICT professionals were falling well behind employees in other occupations. In the twelve months to February 2005, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported Australian Average Weekly Earnings increasing by 4.8%, the rate of increase being 50% greater than that reported by ICT professionals responding to the ACS Remuneration Survey.”
“Rates charged by independent contractors varied considerably, though generally fell in a range of $50 to $100 per hour, depending on nature of work undertaken.”
What IT career branches and skills bases are providing the highest paying jobs?
“Sales and Marketing and General Management positions continue to be the most lucrative positions based on the median value of total remuneration packages”
What industries are providing the greatest demand for IT professionals?
“The strongest levels of demand were reported in the mining and health sectors whilst levels of demand, whilst still robust, were comparatively lower in the education and public administration sectors.”
