Jobs Whilst Studying

June 27th 2006 00:52
This week I’m going to look at some employment options for students. I guess the key factors students look for in a job are shift flexibility, something that is going to fit in with your class and study schedule. Nothing too stressful or mind bending, after a day of crunching through study the last thing you want to be doing is backing up with some further stressful mental exhaustion. Finally, something with a decent rate of pay, you can expect a grand salary for semi skilled work but at the same time, you want to make sure that any time devoted to a job is worth your while. If driving about delivering pizza’s only leaves you with a small tip, hefty petrol bill and unwanted wear and tear on your car, you’ve got to wonder whether the job is worth the hassle.

So what are some good areas for students to look into for jobs? There are several categories which provide great temporary employment opportunities for people getting through their studies. These categories include tutoring, retail, hospitality, telemarketing/call centre work, clerical, childminding, gardening, cleaning and campus based work.

Tutoring:

Tutoring younger students is a great way to provide some positive re-enforcement and influences on younger students who may be struggling with their studies. Some people are just naturally good at explaining ideas and concepts. They are natural teachers who enjoy the experience of passing on their knowledge. Others find the process of teaching tedious and frustrating. If teaching is not your forte, give tutoring a miss, you’ll be tearing your hair out within an hour. Meanwhile, for those with a flare for explaining concepts, tutoring can be a rewarding and fulfilling job option.

There are two ways to go about tutoring. You can either join a tutoring agency who will find students in your area for you. They’ll generally provide all the tutoring material and topics to be taught and much of the organization side will be done for you. You don’t have to worry about advertising or finding students and talking to parents. The agency will match you up with students that need tutoring in your fields of expertise. As part of an agency, you can be expected to be paid around $20 per hour which has to cover any traveling expenses to and from the student’s house.

The other option is to advertise as a private tutor. The financial rewards are far greater. Check your local community paper for going rates of tutors, but generally maths, science and English tutors will charge a minimum of $25 per hour and some areas can charge as much as $40 per hour. As a private tutor, more organization needs to be done on your part. For starters, you’ll need to advertise your services. This means placing an advert in a local paper. Distributing flyers or using word of mouth. You’ll also need to get up to date with what the student is expected to study and get to grips with their syllabus. The demand for tutoring services is relatively high and provided you can get a copy of the student’s syllabus, being a private tutor is probably a much better option than joining an agency. Eitherway, dedicating a few afternoons a week to tutoring younger students can be a rewarding, low stress job with an attractive rate of pay.
