Looking for a Job – Employers

Through your library and Internet research, develop a list of potential employers in your desired career field. Employer websites will often contain lists of job openings or vacancies. Websites and business directories can provide you with information on how to apply for a position or whom to contact for future positions. Even if no open positions are posted, do not hesitate to contact the employer and the relevant department. Often someone displaying initiative can land a job and some employers may not even bother advertising positions. There is never any harm in inquiring about available positions.



If possible try to get into contact with someone working in the same area in which you wish to work. Ask them how they got started, what they like and dislike about the work, what type of qualifications are necessary for the job, and what type of personality succeeds in that position.


Even if they don’t have a position available, they may be able to put you in contact with other people who might hire you, and they can keep you in mind if a position opens up. Make sure to send them your résumé and a cover letter. If you are able to obtain an interview, be sure to send a thank-you note. Surprisingly, directly contacting employers is one of the most successful means of job hunting.


In some industries, getting you foot in the door can be a challenge. Be persistent but polite with your enquiries. Initially, you may have to accept a reduced salary than that of which you were expecting, put in additional hours or be subject to a probationary period. For a short period of time, these sacrifices are relatively small and they may lead to a highly successful career. Be aware of exploitation, there should be a finite review period after which time you’ll get assessed and should receive the full benefits of employment. Whether that be an increase in pay or better working hours. The key to the probationary period is to demonstrate that you are a hard worker with enthusiasm.
