Nephrologists are specialist doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney related diseases and many conditions that cause renal impairment and renal (kidney) failure.
These conditions include kidney diseases and/or kidney failure which will require dialysis therapy - chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis. Nephrologists will also operate and manage patients who have had kidney transplants.
In order to practice as a nephrologist in Australia, one must hold an accredited medical degree and passed all the necessary requirements set about by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australian and New Zealand Paediatric Nephrology Association (ANZPNA).
Nephrology is a highly sought after medical sub-specialty thus nephrologists are offered very generous renumeration packages for their work.
You can learn more about nephrology by visiting the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN).
