Ophthalmologist
November 28th 2007 20:45
A ophthalmologist is a qualified specialist doctor that specialises in the diagnosis and treatment (usually surgery) of the eyes and visual system.
Since ophthalmologists mostly perform operations on eyes, they are generally categorised as surgeons, however, they also provide a full spectrum of care including:
- routine eye exams
- diagnosis and medical treatment of eye disorders and diseases
- prescriptions for eyeglasses
- surgery and management of eye problems that are caused by systemic illnesses
Medical graduates wishing to obtain a specialist qualification in ophthalmology must undertake a 5 year vocational training program which comprises of two years of basic training during which trainees must demonstrate integrated clinical skills and knowledge in the ophthalmic sciences (OS) and the ophthalmic basic competencies and knowledge (OBCK); two years of advanced training during which trainees are expected to demonstrate integrated knowledge, clinical and surgical skills as documented in the clinical standards.
A final year during which the trainee broadens their specialist experience in preparation for specialist qualification and to function in the community as an independent ophthalmologist.
During this program, prospective ophthalmologists are also given the opportunity to develop expertise in a subspecialty such as:
- Corneal diseases
- Retina and vitreous diseases
- Glaucoma
- Pediatric eye problems
- Plastic surgery
Ophthalmologists are not to be confused with optometrists who are optometric doctors rather than medical doctors.
