Psychologists are experts in the field of psychology, the scientific study of people’s behaviour and their mental processes thus psychologists are concerned with how people act, think, reason, and feel.
To investigate and understand these issues, psychologists use a diverse range of methods which includes serving as consultants to communities and organisations; diagnose and treat people's mental states; assess intelligence and personality. They study how human beings relate to each other and also to machines, and they work to improve these relationships. With the increased globalisation that is bringing people together, psychologists bring important knowledge and skills to understanding diverse cultures.
Psychologists traditionally study both normal and abnormal functioning - concentrating on behaviours that affect mental functioning and emotional health. Here are some examples:
- Psychologists work with business executives, actors, and athletes to reduce stress and improve performance.
- Psychologists advise police on the personality profiles of criminals and they collaborate with educators on school reform.
- Immediately following a calamity, such as a highway collapse or natural disaster, psychologists help victims and bystanders recover from the trauma of the event.
A common misconception that psychologists and psychiatrists are the same is incorrect. Psychologists are not doctors and therefore they cannot prescribe medication. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, are medical doctors who did further study in the area of mental health thus are able to prescribe medication.
In order to practice as a certified and registered psychologist in Australia, a four year degree in psychology must be completed plus 2 years supervision or a postgraduate qualification. To become a full member of the Australian Psychological Society Ltd (APS) requires six years of academic study. To become an associate member requires a four-year sequence of academic study.
Psychology courses are offered nationwide at many Australian Universities. According to Graduate Careers Australia, psychology graduates can expect a median starting salary of $40,000.
