Reclaiming your life

September 15th 2006 00:32
The key to winning the struggle between your career and your lifestyle is effective time management and a good dose of perspective. My friend was recently complaining about how when she was a student and didn’t have a job, all what she wanted was a full time job to be able to comfortably pay the bills and not be scrapping by each week. Now that she’s full employed, she’s got all the money she could possibly need, except she got no time or energy to get out and do the fun stuff she always dreamed about. Its one of life’s great paradoxes, when you’re unemployed you’ve got all the time in he world to do anything, but not the means. When you’re fully employed, you’ve got the means to do anything, but never the time.

Nevertheless, there’s bound to be some sort of middle ground. Work and play go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other. If you don’t get the balance right, you’re bound to be miserable. This is where effective time management and planning can really help to get your proper balance of work, rest and play.

Over a lunch break, afternoon or weekend plan out all your typical weekly activities. Categorize them as you see fit into activities that you enjoy, chores and daily/weekly miscellaneous things. Also figure out how many hours it takes for each activity. Your list should factor in work, general traveling estimates, grocery shopping household jobs, any physical activity or sports, hobbies etc. Divide these activities between things that you like doing and things that you have to do but don’t necessarily enjoy. As you divide up your list put an asterisk next to anything that is a priority. This is a very personalize process. Some people may consider exercise as a chore that needs to be a priority, other will consider it as an enjoyable activity that is less important.

The next step is to grab a weekly planner and just like you did for high school divide up your seven days into hourly periods. Then use your list to sketch up your weekly timetable. When it comes to allocating your time you’ve got two options. Some people like to bundle up all the horrible chores into a few days, say at the beginning of the week and then use the latter half of the week to kick back with some enjoyable activities. Others will prefer to mix it up and do at least one fun thing every day. However you do it, take into consideration how you generally feel at that time of the week/day. Are you really going to want to go for your weekly jog at 8:30pm Friday night or grocery shopping at 6am on Saturday? Be realistic and schedule some general free time to do any miscellaneous activities that come up.

Once you get into a routine, you’ll find it much easier to organize your lifestyle, career and get motivated to do the horrible chores knowing that you’ve got time scheduled for some fun activities. You’ll probably become more efficient, if you can parcel your time into manageable time slots. Rather than loafing about thinking of something fun to do during a spare moment, you’ll already have something in the pipeline.

The trick is to getting back to what you did as a kid. Weekdays you’d go to school and then Tuesday night was footy training night, Wednesday you’d catch up with your best friend, etc. On the weekends you’d have something fun a game to play, movies and somewhere in all of it you’d fit in homework. There was a routine and always something to look forward to. Adult life should be no different.
