A rheumatologist is a specialist physician who is qualified in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases associated with joints, muscles and bones i.e. arthritis.
Rheumatologists are specifically trained to treat arthritis, certain autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal pain disorders on top of the more common rheumatic diseases which includes:
Joint Arthritis Disease
- Gout
- Spinal problems
- Osteoarthritis
Muscles & Tendons
- Fibromyalgia
- Polymyalgia rheumatica
- Tendonitis
Bone Disease
- Osteoporosis
- Paget’s disease
Doctors wishing to practice as rheumatologists in Australia must hold an accredited medical degree and passed all the necessary requirements set about by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australian Rheumatology Association. These requirements include a minimum of two years’ core training which includes acquisition of knowledge of aspects of basic and applied medical sciences relevant to rheumatic and connective-tissue disease; training in statistical methods, research techniques and critical evaluation of the results of investigation; competence in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; clinical pharmacology and assessment and management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, including cognitive, behavioural, and biopsychosocial components.
Rheumatologists are very sought after due to the ageing population thus chronic diseases, including musculoskeletal conditions are very much on the increase.
