Student Jobs - Childminding:

July 5th 2006 00:07
Childminding:

Babysitting, nannying and childminding is a great option for getting a bit of extra sending money. You can have the flexibility of taking it on as an ongoing part time job or simply using it as a occasional way of making some extra spending money as the odd favour to friends and family. With the cost of childcare centres on the rise, more and more duel income families are advertising for people to help look after their children during the day or after school. These families are looking to employ someone to assist with gathering their children from school, looking after them until the parents can return home from work and possibly assist with some light domestic duties during the working week. The work is relatively easy although some will require that you have a drivers license and be available from mid afternoon times. Before venturing into regular childminding work, you should start out with a bit of irregular experience either looking after youngsters from your family and friends. Do some evening baby sitting to ensure you can handle the responsibilities. People will usually want you to provide some references to demonstrate that you are a reliable and responsible person to care for their children. Getting into some evening casual baby sitting is a good way of developing some references.

As I’ve stressed, looking after children is a big responsibility and you should make sure that you enjoy the company of children and have a patient disposition if you intend of getting into this field of part time work. You should always have a discussion with the parents prior to looking after children to get a clear understanding of how they want you to direct the children, what to do if discipline is needed, what sort of activities do they want you to do (help with home work, provide dinner, put them to bed etc.), if any children have allergies or medical needs and who you can contact in an emergency. If an employee expects to behave in a manor that you don’t think is acceptable, politely excuse yourself from the job.

For the purposes of safety, it is important to err on the side of caution when you are looking after other people’s children. Be aware of child protection laws and their implications. If something should go wrong or an awkward situation should occur make sure you are open and honest with the parents. Keep some sort of documentary evidence of any incident. Typically a nanny position should be smooth sailing, but kids can get themselves into a sorts of mischief so it is allows good to be aware and have a plan of what to do should a child get into trouble. Never neglect to tell a parent if something has happened to their child no matter how minor the incident. Even if a problem has been rectified before the parents return. If Timmy slipped and grazed his knee, Sam punched his sister or Clare caught her fingers in a door make sure you tell the parents when they return.

If you are good with children, are alert and have a good grasp of common sense, baby sitting and nannying can be a great job for students. The job requires a fair amount of personal responsibility. You are required to be a role model. If you develop a good relationship with the family, a child minding job doesn’t even feel like a job. The key to success as a childminder is having good communication with the parents.
